Who are they?
U-Turn was started in 1997 by Colleen Lewis, who felt that she could make a difference in the community. In order to learn more about the people she wanted to help, she started speaking to homeless people and soon found out that many of them were not alcoholics but rather victims of their circumstances. Since then the organisation grew in a three part phase and has caused many homeless people to create a U-Turn in their lives.
What they do?
U-Turn has a runs a programme that has three phases.
Phase 1 – Making Contact
This is done through soup kitchens, street work, dental and medical aid, etc.
Phase 2 – Rehabilitation
The organisation works with the individuals who truly want to turn their lives around. Sheltered employment and sheltered accommodation is provided along with a structured rehab course.
Phase 3 – Reintegration
Those participating in the programme are encouraged to find permanent employment and to move out of the shelter into their own accommodation. During this period ongoing support is provided.
