The Fancy Stitch is an income generating project in rural Kwazulu Natal. The Project aims to create jobs,
alleviate poverty and build skills. Fancy Stitch was started in 2001 by Maryna Heese and now has 400
members who participate in the project.
Sound impressive? It is. Fancy Stitch makes a tangible difference to the lives of the women of
Ingwavuma, Kwazulu Natal. However, when they report on their successes and challenges,
in the form of the written word, or perhaps in reporting to their supporters, it’s hard to capture
accurately the difference they make in the lives of these women. Sometimes the difference is not
monetary, sometimes it’s because “I can make things now, with my own hands”.
It’s also hard to convey the hopes and dreams of the women involved in the project, like Maryna Heese
who has been involved in helping these women empower themselves through traditions like storytelling.
