Send your pics to info@ngoconnectafrica.org | | | 0 | 27/11/2008 07:39 | Hello everyone. Thanks once again for the beautiful Acer Travelmate 4520 which I won in the competition! Its features are fantastic! I herewith attach some photos when I received this fantastic prize! | | | 1 | 21/11/2008 10:06 | Dear members and community members of NGOCONNECTAFRICA and Sponsors
A huge 'THANK YOU'. I just heard I have won a laptop through your competition. You really made my day (and year). The laptop will be put to good use and couldn't come at a more needy time as this. When it is delivered to me I will post some photos on the website. But "Thank You' once again beforehand to all who made this happen! | | | 2 | 19/11/2008 10:17 | The project which I run is a non-profit art and craft trust. We are currently working as an Old Mutual sponsored project, to become self sustaining. What is concerning me at the moment is that NGO's are being told to become self sustaining. This is good, in that we will become more business like, professional, and be able to pay our own way. On the flip side, surely if we all become self sustaining, we will eventually choose to become CC's, make the crafters share holders, and shed all the requirements (such as boards of trustees etc) which are current requirements of us, as NPO's. If the NPO's follow this route, surely this means the end of the NGO Sector? What then also of public funding? What becomes of public funders and that resource, when all the NGO's have become self sustaining and maybe even migrated to a new status, such as a CC? There seems to be no current debate around this new trend in the SA NGO world? Robin Opperman- Director, Umcebo Trust. | | | 0 | 18/11/2008 22:02 | Thank you NGOCONNECT for the call to say I had won an XBOX! How exciting!! Thank you for running the competition and to the sponsors who gave these wonderful prizes. Good to get an opportunity to thank the NGOCONNECT team for all you are doing to encourage ICT in the Civil Society sector. Thank and warm regards Darlene (from Goodwill Industries) | | | 2 | 13/11/2008 11:00 | Hi
I am new to the world of ICT4D and exploring ways of using it in our work. One particular field I am interested in is using it to combat Human Trafficking - awareness and education. I see myself as computer literate but not all that tech savvy. So if you have ideas please share them in layman terms. Right now i am at the MobileActive08 Conference and learning about ways to use mobile technology for development and activism.
One interesting idea to get the discussion going is a virtual march - i.e. to get people to photograph themselves with a poster/message and send that to be posted on a website - or what Greenpeace did was to project those photos onto the wall of the building where lawmakers were meeting.
If you are just full of ideas to share that would be great, if you are intersted in partnering with us on combatting human trafficking that would be great too.
Human Traffikcing is modern day slavery and it is very prevalent in Southern Africa. Yet, the man/woman on the street is mostly unaware. If there is interest we could psot more information on Human Trafficking too. | | | 0 | 13/11/2008 10:02 | Greetings All,
Sharing with you the launch of our 2nd Computer Lab.
We are also excited of being part of NGO Connect Africa so that we can share our vision & mission in "bringing ICT to the communities"
Warm Regards
Smiley | | | 2 | 12/11/2008 17:47 | I would like to thank all the organisers and sponsors of the ICT4D academy for the wonderful job done. This was a truly superb event.
For all the participants the key thing is to implement and followup on the lessons learnt.
We all need to continuosly support each other to make this academy a success. | | | 0 | 12/11/2008 15:58 | Hi Everyone
i would like to know how to use Facebook effectively in propmoting/branding my organisation - maybe even fundraising.
i have registered it as a cause, and have some members - but what now? Does anyone have experience or suggestions of have seen a cause that is actually usefull.
thanks
elske | | | 1 | 07/11/2008 15:56 | Wow it is so good to be registered - thank you NGOConnectafrica for this communication network.
I have been fundraising in SA for 15 years and have pleasure in introducing you to SAIF the only professional institute representing and supporting the fundraising profession in Southern Africa. For more info go to www.saifundraising.org.za to find out more about membership benefits and education and training specifically for fundraising professionals. | | | 1 | 07/11/2008 15:54 | I am the Director of an NPO Art and Craft Trust. I would like to rant and rave a bit about a phenomena we face at this time of year (i.e. Christmas). We have legions of people, with large budgets for functions, who see us as a free source of decor. They call us up and tell us that they have a wonderful opportunity for us to market and expose our work and talents. What this involves is us taking large pieces from the shop we have, booking transport, display the work and wiring it up, and at the end of the function reversing this process. This basically costs us money, and earns us the reputation of being the place where you can get free decor. At the same time work loaned out, has to be sold at a reduced priced, and often returns damaged.
When you express concern about this, people act as if you are ungrateful. I would like to stress that we have pressure on us to be self sustaining, and we try to juggle our small budgets to make stock for our shops, so these 'opportunities' are money draining black holes, which earn us a reputation which we fight to move away from the entire year.
I would like to appeal to function organizers, corporates etc to instead set aside money to buy pieces from NPO's. In this way you will really be developing us, the work we do and those we serve.
Robin Opperman- Director Umcebo Trust.

How would you like to see what you see and hear what you hear on our site? That is exactly what we would like you to do. Report news from your community, village, NGO or anything to do with technology by e-mailing us your news.
Send your press releases, news about a special project, grants or even a small victory so that the community can keep track of what you do and how you go about it. It is only by learning from each other that we all grow stronger.
| | | 0 | 28/10/2008 16:26 | At the risk of oversimplifying, one of the things I notice the most is that as NGO's we do not often take the time to simply remain in e-mail contact with each other. Sometimes the miracle of the net, and effective NGO work are just about something that simple. You can give people all the hardware and the fastest net connection in the world, but if they do not know how to start and maintain effective communication, it is all pie in the sky. I attended an award ceremony in LA for ThinkQuest many years ago, and was struck by a delegation from India, who had the oldest computer in the world, erratic power supply (more off than on) and the slowest dial up in the world. Despite this all, they worked with partners in Hong Kong, and developed an award winning educational medical website, which received a Gold Award. The lesson in this all, is that success is not always about money and resources. It is about something inside, that will see you making a plan, and making do with the most pathetic equipment, and ultimately holding your own and winning in a field where your competitors have the fastest broadband and the newest computers. ICT's complement what we do and who we are, they will not reinvent something that is not there.
Regards
